Papayat ba ako? (Will I lose weight?)




“Lex, kailangan ko nang pumayat. Sobrang taba ko na, pupunta kami beach next month at ayokong makita nila ang laki ng tyan ko. Kaya ba yun?” (I need to lose weight for I have become extremely fat. We’ll be going to the beach next month and I don’t want people to see my huge gut. Is it possible?)

“Summer na pre, papayatin mo nga ako.” (Dude, it’s summer. Make me skinny.)

“Kuya, ga-graduate na ‘ko. Gusto ko mag diet pero ang sarap kumain eh, papayat ba ako?” (I’ll be graduating soon and I want to go on a diet but I sooo love food, will I lose weight?)

As bizarre as they may sound, these are just some of the questions I get to entertain (fortunately) on a week-to-week basis. Yes, they are real questions coming from real persons who seek genuine advice on how to have that dream bod they ever wanted (or close to it). If you have a similar inquiry, then this article is for you.

There’s a famous saying by Nora Roberts that goes, “If you don’t ask, the answer will always be no.” Could it be true? It’s as true as your nose (unless you’re Kris Aquino). And I deeply admire those who have the audacity to ask the most elusive questions. Unfortunately, not every time you ask, you get a “yes” answer.

I don’t care who you are, I don’t care where you’re from, but if you throw the Papayat ba ako? to my face, I can pretty much say what’s going on with your life and have a good idea on what you are doing (or not doing).

 

NO, YOU WON’T.

I hate to break it to you but that’s the reality. The fact that you asked that question means what you’re doing is not enough (if you’re doing anything at all).

NO, YOU WON’T.

… because you talk more than you walk.

NO, YOU WON’T.

… because instead of actually putting on a sweat in the gym, you chose to be on your laptop watching some Koreanovela.

NO, YOU WON’T.

… because you spent more time in the bathroom taking selfie’s than in the treadmill.

NO, YOU WON’T.

As blunt as it sounds, there’s nothing else to it. You simply can’t handle the piercing truth.

You won’t lose weight unless you grasp the reality that you are not in the destination you want to be. And it’s totally okay, every one of us has been on that road. Unless you change your habit, unless you follow through with that 3-month dietary plan, you are going absolutely nowhere. Unless you take massive action, you won’t lose that extra belly weight.




Okay hopefully you’ve had enough motivation from me and your fire has been lit. Let’s begin by working on how we can change the status quo. Over the years of trying everything in the fitness world; from running 2 hours without stopping (not that impressive I know) to dropping muscle ups, I was able to somehow come up with a secret-but-not-perfect formula to success. 

Simply follow the “success checklist” that I created and I guarantee that you will be able to make “it” happen.

1. Stop asking and start deciding. I need you to forget that question but instead tell yourself that you are GOING to transform it into reality. “I will lose weight.”

2. Set a clear goal and execute. Be S-M-A-R-T.

  • S – Specific (I will attend group boxing classes after work)
  • M – Measurable (I will lose 10 pounds)
  • A – Attainable (I will lose 15% of my total body weight)
  • R – Realistic (I will finish a marathon 6 months from now)
  • T – Time-bound (I will attain my target weight of 120 pounds by October 2017)

3. Figure out what’s working and what’s not working. What works for your coworker may not be the best route for you. That’s okay. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to losing weight, or to any endeavor, at all. If you’ve been running forever and have hit a plateau, maybe your body just needs a few high-intensity exercise to restart your engines. You won’t know until you try, listen to your body and don’t hesitate to drop the old routines that aren’t giving the results you desire and adopt a new one. Try Muay Thai for example. =p



4. Stay committed to your goal but be flexible with your approach. Let’s say your goal is to lose 20 pounds and you plan on going 100% NO-RICE diet to achieve it. So you go to work every day, bring a handful salad in your lunchbox and smile as you lose 5 baby pounds. Soon, you start to notice that you aren’t losing any more weight and are stuck halfway through your goal. What do you then?

If you’re like the rest, you quit dieting and go on a “cheat meal” to “reward” yourself for a wonderful job you have done for the rest of your life and start to gain back 15 pounds. Sounds familiar? But if you’re one of the few (and have read this post), you would have been flexible with your method.

Follow Bruce Lee’s advice and be like water or watah! You may opt to incorporate exercises, like running on a treadmill once or twice a week for example, instead of going on an all-out deprivation mode. After all, you can use that extra energy you get from them salads. =p That’s just one example of being flexible with your approach.  

These are just my personal tips on how you can turn your hopes of losing weight into reality. I wish I was able to somehow enlighten you and give you concrete solutions to your “problem”. So the next time you ask, “Papayat ba ako?” you already have an answer.
